While I have been pretty happy with my Samsung SyncMaster 226BW flat screen, I've read some disturbing reports on the net that Samsung provided one class of panels (with an "S" LCD, manufactured by them) to the reviewing press, and another class (with an "A" or "C" class LCD, manufactured by AU Optronics) to unwitting buyers.I did not know any of this when I purchased the panel. In fact Villman didn't even let me look at it: sealed box and all. So I carried the box home "blind."
Thankfully (or perhaps not.. ignorance is bliss) there is a way to determine what sort of panel I have got, via a hidden service menu.
- set Brightness and Contrast to zero
- exit the OSD
- enter the OSD again by pressing the Menu key
- press the Source (VGA/DVI) button for >5 seconds

I don't know what I'd have done if I actually had an A- or C-panel, because the truth is, this screen is gorgeous. But maybe it's gorgeous because it's an S-panel..

Thanks for the hint, Orly.
I need to shop for a new monitor when I get home, to revive my old PC. (a 3+ year old Celeron D Prescott, not quite as old as your old PC :) )
The Villman pricelist does not have your unit listed. Actually, there's nothing listed!
Here at my Israel workplace, I'm on a SyncMaster 203B. At 20" it's smaller than yours but I still find it too large. 17" is really the software development sweet spot for me.
But then, I probably won't be coding at home (can't get my open source hacking at home groove back!) and will be watching downlaods, so larger is probably better.
Oddly enough, 22" seems just right for me.
I used a 17" at IG for a year. It was OK. Not great.
Debug Perspective on Eclipse at 1680x1050 on this 22" is teh win. :-)
This one cost 19K at Villman. They don't update their web price list anymore (not for more than 18 months now). The only PH dealer who does is Rising Sun, even PCX does not anymore.
I think they realized they were making it easier for customers to engage in "baratan."
Hmm villman didn't let you open the box before purchasing it... I always insist, I don't care if their getting annoyed, that I see the product first to check if somethings wrong with it kahit maliit lang..
